This Grebe is Great!

Mom met this Great Crested Grebe at the fishing village of Muiden in North Holland. He has really pretty colors on the back of his head. Mom watched him for a while, as he was quite a character and very entertaining!

Grebes are excellent divers and he kept diving way down in the water and catching fish. This type of Grebe is the largest in Europe, but even so, that fish is way bigger than his head! Is he really going to eat that whole fish?

Yes! He ate that fish whole, all in one gulp! I can not eat my fish that way at all.

Mom asked him between dives if he wanted to be my friend, but he was too busy fishing underwater. Luckily, one of his friends already had a belly full of fish, and he said they would both like to be my friends!

Whoo hoo! I have more birdie friends! And you know, birdies are my favorite!

Before you go, please sign my GUESTBOOK, and stop by my SMALL WORLD too, thanks!

Wow, your friend swallowed that fish whole! Do you think the fish is swimming in your friend's stomach?

My life has been pretty plain lately. Yes, it was super hot last week, but it's really cooled down now. I don't have any interesting stories to tell... maybe my parents should take me on a good car ride this weekend.

I'm always surprized to see how they eat those enormous fishes. Onse I've seen that the fish was so big that I thought it was bigger as the bird!

In the first photo it almost looks as if he is is smirking... =)

Hi JB
Yeah, my mum only has internet at work right now, cuz we live in the country. She was going to get internet at home, but GAS prices are getting in the way. Gizmo is doing really good, he just bounces right back..I always follow him around and make sure he is okay.
My mum hates storms and shakes really bad and runs around like a crazy lady. We have a outside storm shelter if we need it...I have never seen a tornado before, but my mum has...

Amazing captures and blog here! I initially noticed your “Grebe vs Fish” shot. That looks like a huge (do you know what kind?) fish staring down its captor’s throat!

So the bird was really able to win the struggle and gulp down that big fish okay?? Does the prey put up a good fight, if eaten, does the unlucky fish get swallowed wriggling/alive all the way as well?!
